“Uja” and “Umingmak” (live)
Tanya Tagaq’s music exists is groundbreaking. She shut out the likes of Drake and Arcade Fire to win the 2014 Polaris Music Prize for her album Animism — dedicated to Loretta Saunders, a murdered Inuit woman from Labrador — is even more so. Tagaq’s solo Inuit throat singing, with its raspy growls, piercing shrieks and guttural groans, haunts and provokes. As does she, as an activist who has contributed to public commentary about Idle No More and the Inuit seal hunt.
